Mary is a Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal-winning garden designer. She trained and qualified in garden design and horticulture: she graduated with Distinction in the Foundation Degree in Garden Design from the Northern School of Garden Design and has an RHS Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture.
Mary has been gardening since childhood and has over 20 years’ experience of teaching and training, writing for publication and giving talks. Alongside designing gardens she gives talks, writes for publication and teaches. Mary’s current teaching includes lecturing in Garden Design at the Northern School of Garden Design and teaching Garden Design and Horticulture short courses and workshops in Leeds and elsewhere.
Before starting her garden design business Mary was a university Senior Lecturer. This career and the PhD she completed at its start gave her vital skills for her current work, including project management, attention to detail and accuracy and working to tight deadlines, as well as writing for publication and lecturing. Mary’s academic specialism was early medieval studies, and a deep understanding of the layers of use and meaning of gardens and landscapes is fundamental in her design practice today.
